This past week I had the pleasure of attending a charity cocktail exposition and competition with SLING at Skyline At Waterfront in beautiful Providence, Rhode Island. Going into the night, I really had no idea what to expect. I knew that I, along with a few other sponsors, was going to be judging original cocktails created by bartenders from all over the state while benefiting The Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Really not knowing how this event was going to go, I remained optimistic about because my good friend, Matt Simmons, was in charge and I knew the bartenders could be using my very own shrubs!
After setting up a table for attendees to taste test my shrubs, grabbing a snack, and snapping a few photos, I was ready to try some drinks. I get to my seat that had my own name labeled on the back of it, sat down, proceeded to skim over the grading rubric that was provided to all the judges, and then realized there are 8 bartenders making us two drinks each. My first thought was, “oh boy, what did I get myself in to?!”
As the event began and bartenders started creating their concoctions, the other judges and I proceeded to get to know one another. The bartenders were showing off every trick they had up their sleeves, but the number one thing that caught my eye was how many contestants used my shrubs! It was so interesting to see how the bartenders that were using the shrubs mixed it with all different flavors; some things I never would have thought of. Not only was the flavor great, but the overall presentation and performance put on by every bartender made the whole night that much more fun.
My favorite part of the event was seeing the passion that the bartenders had for their craft. For most, this was their first competition. Some had shaky hands while others clearly felt at ease in the spotlight and the making of the drink was a performance. The way in which each bartender created something that was so unique, well thought out, and incorporated my shrubs was amazing.
This whole night was definitely a success. I met some amazing people, tried some great drinks with my own products being incorporated, and overall just had a fun night. A big thank you to Matt Simmons and Eat Drink RI for hosting this event, all the bartenders who participated in the competition, the other sponsors and judges, and finally to everybody that came out to support a great cause.
